During a search through photographs suitable for publication, a copy of an interesting letter turned up, Ralph having kindly given the original to the Bruce McLaren Trust. In order to preserve authenticity, the copy is reproduced below without modification. This item should prove of considerable interest, as it provides positive evidence as to Ralph's standing in the world of motor racing, as an authoritative engineer.
The correspondence came about as a result of a visit home by the late Bruce McLaren, when he asked Ralph his opinion, regarding a transmission incorporating a torque converter which he was considering using in his Can Am cars. Apparently Jim Hall, Bruce's main adversary, was using a similar system and the object was to counter this if necessary.
This award was inaugurated in 1997 to recognise the competitor who has demonstrated exceptional levels of sportsmanship as well as vehicle presentation, and who embodies the very spirit and values associated with historic and classic racing in New Zealand.
The trophy is from a collection of the late Sybil Lupp, kindly made available by the MG Car club (Wellington Centre),
Ralph Watson was the first to be chosen for this honour in 1997 and his name is the first inscribed on the trophy.
